We've been hearing about a 30-40MP camera sensor lurking in Nokia's R&D labs for a good while now, but thought it to be one of those playful concepts that never see the light of day. It took Nokia switching from Symbian to Windows Phone and taking a nosedive in share price during that restructuring, for it to feel the urge to speed the development up and come up with a "wow" factor.
And "wow" it is - there is no arguing that the Nokia 808 PureView will be the most sophisticated cameraphone out there, but with 41MP sensor at the gigantic for a phone 1/1.2" surface, and simplified lens crafted with record precision, we are nearing DSLR territory. The photography blogs are already abuzz with the silent lossless zoom, pixel oversampling and low-light capabilities of this sensor, which can rival a lot less compact devices. By going for lossless zoom without optics to add bulk, distort the frame and introduce noise while filming, Nokia has managed to make the module in the 808 PureView 50-70% smaller than a conventional optical zoom solution, allowing it to fit the PureView Pro technology into a phone.
