HTC releases updated Android 4.0 update timeline; all models will be updated by August

Just the other day Motorola updated its Android 4.0 update timeline. Now, HTC has followed suit with updated information on which devices are receiving Ice Cream Sandwich and when. The Taiwan based manufacturer says that the HTC Rezound, HTC EVO 3D and HTC Desire S will be updated by July. Other models such as the HTC ThunderBolt and HTC DROID Incredible 2 will be updated to Android 4.0 in the waning days of August.

A list of which devices will be getting the update and when can be found at the sourcelink. HTC says that handsets with 512MB or less of RAM will not be getting updated which means no Ice Cream Sandwich for the HTC ChaCha, HTC Salsa, HTC Wildfire S, HTC Explorer and others. Looking at tablets, the HTC Flyer, the HTC EVO View 4G and the HTC JetStream will all stick with Honeycomb.

It's interesting that many speculated the reason for the lack of an Android 4.0 update for the Motorola DROID 3 and the Motorola DROID X2 had to do with the 512MB of RAM that both models sport. Motorola said that any device that would not be made better by the update would be left alone. HTC's statement that 512MB of RAM was the cutoff point for deciding which models which get Android 4.0 seems to confirm that this is a cut off point and devices without 1GB of RAM might not be able to smoothly run Ice Cream Sandwich. Still, as we have mentioned before, there are some manufacturers releasing Android 4.0 powered models with 512MB of RAM on board.
